We were always buying the big bags of celery available at Costco but rarely finishing it before it went soft and brown. Eventually we figured out that wrapping the chopped and cleaned celery in foil would help it keep in the fridge for up to a month so now we always have a supply on hand.

Here are some how-to’s we have found that show you exactly what to do.

And here is a list of recommended storage methods for celery and other vegetables.

I recently discovered the joys of Costco Bakery’s Maple Pecan Strudels.

This led to the purchase of almost a kilo of Kirkland Pecans and a 1litre jug of Kirkland Pure Canadian Maple Syrup to experiment with at home.

The first recipe I decided to try was a simple one, requiring just a couple of minutes prep and 5-8 minutes of baking.

Spiced Maple Glazed Pecans

There are loads of variations on this recipe which I am yet to try but this time I stuck with quick and easy.

Mix 2:1 maple syrup and unsalted melted butter in a deep bowl (I used about 2 tablespoons maple syrup) with sprinkle of salt and freshly cracked pepper to taste. Toss pecans through mix until compleatly coated (I added a few at a time till most of the liquid was gone) then pour onto a baking tray lined with baking paper.

Spread in a single layer and bake in a preheated oven at 180C for 5-8 minutes (watch carefully as they go from almost done to burnt very quickly!). When done remove from baking paper while still hot.

Will keep for a week in an airtight container.

Other variations include cayenne pepper, cumin, or cinnamon.

I will be adding more recipes as I try them so please check back regularly or let me know in the comments if you have a favorite Maple Pecan recipe I can try.

Another very nice wine in the Kirkland Signature Range. This one disappeared far too quickly – it was very smooth and easy to drink with a lovely aftertaste. As usual we decanted first, although after the first quick sip we couldn’t wait to let it breathe before pouring glasses.

This estate-produced Zinfandel comes from a collection of archival vineyards that have been home to Zinfandel for more than 150 years. Kirkland Signature Old Vine Zinfandel is produced from low-yielding vines that average 45 years of age. This classic Old Vine Zinfandel has opaque shades of deep red-purple fruit with a bouquet and palate structure of blackberry, cassis, blueberry and chocolate, which is supported by vanilla and spice notes from oak maturation and lifted by bright acidity and supple, ripe tannins. Drink now through 2016.

The Kaesler Avignon has been around for a few years now. Kaesler is located in the Barossa Valley, one of Australias oldest wine regions.  The blend varies each year depending on what performs best in a given vintage. In 2008 it’s a blend of 46% Grenache (70 year old vines), 40% Shiraz (65 year old vines) and 14% Mourvedre (43 year old vines).

On pouring, the wine shows an opaque black/dark red colour with deep dark crimson red hue. On the nose lifted scents of ripe black raspberry intermixed with liquorice are foremost followed by some ripe blackberry, dark cherry and spice. Full bodied the palate delivers rich exuberant flavours of black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice followed by a touch of earth and some spice. Fine grained yet sturdy tannin structure lends good support to the generous levels of fruit. Long aftertaste of black raspberry, liquorice, earth and spice.

On a personal note, this has been one of the best bottles I’ve opened this year, dark and rich but not thick or hevay tasting and very smooth, more so once decanted and left to breathe for a while. I will definitely be convincing Corey that we need to do some more tasting of this one!

Costco sell this as a twin pack in a size we haven’t come across elsewhere… having just done a quick Google search I am stunned by the number of positive reviews the Organix product has, particularly the Moroccan Argan Oil range. I am equally stunned at the prices people are paying for this product.

Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo & Conditioner $31.99 (twin pack)

According to an email update we received from Costco Australia today, there is plenty to tell about the progress of Victoria’s second Costco site in Ringwood.

Construction is well underway with the concrete sales floor almost complete and the steel wall supports going up rapidly – we will have some photos of the build progress to share with you soon.

Costco has also set up a temporary office within the local Eastland Shopping Center. You can collect a Costco membership brochure, make enquiries about membership and employment, and see some of the items Costco will have on offer in the warehouse.

You can also sign up early for membership online at http://www.costco.com.au/Common/Membership.shtml?Loc=104. which will allow you to register an email to receive information and offers from the Ringwood warehouse. However your membership will be valid for 12 months from the opening of Ringwood, which we assume means it will not be valid for use at the Docklands or any other site until the Ringwood store opening.

If you are keen, they are also in the process of hiring team members for the Ringwood site via the AU website http://www.costco.com.au/Common/CurrentVacancies.shtml.

The address and contact details for the temporary Office at Eastland is:

The first South Australian store will be located in Kilburn.

Axiom Properties (ASX: AXI) has signed a Heads of Agreement with U.S. retail giant Costco to develop South Australia’s first Costco warehouse outlet as part of Axiom’s $65 million retail development in the Adelaide suburb of Kilburn.  Costco plans to construct a 14,000 square metre retail warehouse on the site.

We heard about this through the Proactive Investors website – Click here to access the article.

An announcement was scheduled to be made yesterday too about the Brisbane (North Lakes) store, however we still have no news of the pending decision.

We recently stumbled upon (well a friend actually pointed it out) a fantastic bargain at Costco -the WeeRide Limited Baby Bicycle Seat.

  • Thick seat and back padding as well as a padded shoulder harness
  • Deluxe safety harness with oversized buckle
  • Unique carrying position
  • Adjustable foot cups
  • A secure and comfortable carrier to keep your child secure while giving him or her a much better view of the road and surrounding activities.

Our friend told us he had purchased this seat on sale for $179 at least 3 years ago.
